2015 AUA Brendler Award

2015 American Urological Association (AUA)
Urology Care Foundation (UCF) Brendler Award
Summer Medical Student Fellowship Program

Emory's Medical Student, Rishi Robert Sekar, received the 2015 AUA Urology Care Foundation Herbert Brendler, MD, Summer Medical Student Fellowship Program Award. The award will support Rishi's Discovery research project under the mentorship of Associate Professor Viraj Master. Master/Rishi team will be studying the prognostic value of specific immunologic markers on the overall survival and recurrence in patients with renal cell carcinoma.

Characterization of Host Anti-tumor Immune Response with MHC1 and PD-1 Expression and the Associated Impact on Disease Progression in Patients with Renal Cell Carcinoma
Renal cell carcinoma is the eighth most common cancer and the thirteenth leading cause of cancer death, afflicting almost 64,000 patients in the United States. The ability to predict patient prognosis and survival is limited and needs improvement to ensure proper treatment and surveillance. With recent advancements in cancer immunology, the interaction between the host immune system and cancer cells has become an area of new discovery. Our aim is to investigate the various immune markers involved in this interaction to better understand disease progression, and predict disease outcomes and response to treatment. This study will specifically examine the prognostic value of MHC1 and PD-1 expression in patients with renal cell carcinoma.
