Dr. Filson received his undergraduate education from the University of California, Berkeley, with a BA in Molecular Cell Biology with an emphasis on immunology. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan Medical School and graduated cum laude in 2006. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and received the UMMS Department of Urology's annual scholarship for the top medical student interested in urology. He completed his urology residency and a year of research, followed by a Masters Degree in Health and Health Care Research from UM's Rackham School of Graduate Studies. His research focused on improving cost, quality, and access to health care across broad populations. This was followed by two-year fellowship training in urologic oncology at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

Dr. Filson's primary clinical interest is urologic oncology. This includes management of complex urological malignancies using such methods as robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer, robotic partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer, and advanced focal therapy techniques. Dr. Filson has particular interest in active surveillance of prostate cancer with novel biomarkers and targeted biopsies using MRI-ultrasound fusion technology.

Dr. Filson's research interests include the pursuit of individualized treatments for prostate and kidney cancer, and he has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, Urology Care Foundation, and American Cancer Society. He is currently focusing on optimizing the use of active surveillance for patients with prostate cancer.
