Dr. Carney's extensive training has included general urology, oncology, trauma and reconstructive surgery, and he is a recognized expert in urethral reconstruction.

Dr. Carney received his Doctorate in Pharmacology from Mercer University in Atlanta, earned his MD degree from the Medical College of Georgia, and completed his surgery internship and urology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, a major center for reconstructive surgery. During his urology residency, Dr. Carney's primary focus was extensive reconstructive surgery of the genitourinary system following trauma. Dr. Carney then completed a two-year fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY, where he often treated prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancers.

In 2001, Dr. Carney was named the first full-time chief of urology at Grady Memorial Hospital. Interestingly, when he was studying to become a pharmacist, Dr. Carney worked as a poison information specialist with the Georgia Poison Center from 1987 to 1989, which was then located inside Grady.

Dr. Carney began making annual surgical trips to Benjamin Bloom Children's Hospital, San Salvador, with Georgia Urology and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta surgeon Edwin Smith, MD, in 2009. Drs. Carney and Smith assemble the team for each trip, book the flights, acquire the necessary medical supplies, and pay all the expenses. Their main intent is to train the El Salvadoran pediatric surgeons they work with in pediatric urologic surgery. Dr. Carney has also made several surgical trips to Haiti with the Emory Haiti Alliance, a volunteer consortium of Emory medical students, surgery and anesthesiology residents, faculty physicians, and mid-level practitioners that journey to Haiti in the summer to provide care in the Central Plateau region, the poorest and most medically underserved area in the country.
